Test Equipment
Building
and maintaining a network can often cause frustration when hunting
bugs and problems - especially when a network grows over time.
There exists a number of testing tools perfect
for finding problems quickly and efficiently to ensure they can
be fixed as soon as possible.
You may find that hardware included on your network
includes internal diagnostics and problem-solving tools, but these
aren't likely to find every problem on your network.
The most popular of testing tools is the cable
tester. By plugging both ends of a cable into a testing box (sometimes
sold as two units for testing long cables across a building) one
can test each connector to ensure data flows in both directions
without interference or interruption.
For more advanced testing techniques a multi-meter
can be used, which can detect cable integrity, voltage and current,
and resistance across any type of cable without the need for connectors
or termination.
Due to the nature of fibre-optic regular testing
hardware and techniques will not function. Fibre testing equipment
is available that transmits and receives test data using light transmissions
across the strands of fibre, testing data integrity and attenuation
over the link.
If you are unsure of which testing equipment you
require, your supplier will be able to assist.
